God is a DJ

I was in a restaurant (I say restaurant, it was actually pizza hut) the other day and Pink was playing, these lyrics stuck us as we were eating…

If God is a DJ
Life is a dance floor
Love is the rhythm
You are the music
If God is a DJ
Life is a dance floor
You get what you’re given
It’s all how you use it

Think About these lyrics for a second…

They offer a great analogy, one, which perhaps is often better than I give. Music, rhythm and dance flow, they move, they create and are flexible. They’re fun and full of life. Yet at the same time, it follows a pattern, a beat and if you get it wrong you create a mess or a muddle.

A wall of sound.

A stumble in the dance.

May be we are supposed to dance, to celebrate and have fun with the ‘rhythm’ of God’s creation. You get what you’re given, it’s all how you use it.

Christian A.B.C.’s

“What must I do to have eternal life?” is often a question asked to Christians. Here was the answer I was once told, loosely paraphrased.

“The answer is quite easy really; in fact it’s as easy as A.B.C. That is to Admit your wrong, Believe in Christ and Confess what you have done.”

Easy as that.

I find it funny to read Jesus’ response when asked a very similar question, check this out in Matthew Chapter 19, verse 16-26.

‘Now a man came up to Jesus and asked, “teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?”

“Why do you ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, obey the commandments.”

        “Which ones?” the man enquired.

Jesus replied, “‘Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony. Honour your father and mother,’ and ‘love your neighbour as yourself.’”

“All these I have kept,” the young man said. “What do I still lack?”

Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.

Then Jesus said to his disciples, “I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”

When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, “Who then can be saved?”

Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are impossible.”

No mention of admitting, believing, confessing. No mention of it being easy.

Notice the use of Jesus’ words ‘if you want to enter life’. Enter life? Aren’t we supposed to enter heaven?

Notice Jesus uses the phrase ‘If you want to be perfect’ and the calls to ‘go’ and ‘follow’. What do these mean?

Why doesn’t Jesus tell the man to believe in him and his resurrection, or love his neighbour and love God, like most Christians of today would?

Is Jesus being serious? Is he being realistic?

Why doesn’t he give us our Christian A.B.C.’s?

Why doesn’t he spell it out for us, give us the 5 pillars of Christianity?

Why doesn’t Jesus make it easy?
