I’m also going to attempt to participate in ‘the generosity experiment.’

The generosity experiment is about saying “yes” to every genuine call for help – whether it be a TV ad from Muslim Aid, or a text from Oxfam, a sponsored event, a beggar or a cold caller.

I heard about the generosity experiment when listening to Sasha Dichter on TED. I invite you to watch his talk and hear his conclusions and see if you would like to join the generosity experiment.

Along with my Uni Musings I found one written around the same time by a friend called Danny Branigan…he said I could post it and I thought it was worth sharing.

Truth

Can’st one speak the truth?

Where can one begin?

Is truth something of the world

or something deep within?

Is truth something one inherits -

Passed from father down to son?

Or is itpart of life’s grand prize -

Something to be lost and won?

If truth is part of knowledge,

And knowledge leads to power,

And power to responisbility,

whats the colour of this flower?

Should you not be reposnisble

For what you say is ‘truth’

By backing up your vocabulary

With physical, hard proof?

What we must learn to do,

We learn to do by doing

An Aristotle quote, for kicks,

In this verse I shall fling

But does this quote extrapolate

To truth and all things new

Half the battle is the teaching

But doings important too.

Is it enough to claim

That the truth dwells within you?

Or should you have to prove it

In everything you do?

Shouldn’t truth be part of your beliefs

Away of life, per say

and evident in what you do

Each and everyday?

I think truths not just morality

But in your actions too;

And people who just ‘know’ the truth

Haven’t really got a clue.

Whilst sorting out stuff ready to move house I stumbled on some old things I wrote at uni. I’m not a writer, they aren’t especially good, but I thought I would post them here to keep them…

A Story

He woke with a terrible headache. Things buzzing around his head. He rolled out of bed with a groan as the scenes from last night played over and over in his mind. What had happened last night? Where did he go? Who was he with? Was he his true self?

Confusion seemed to take over. Nothing was making sense. Something had happened, something had changed. But the memory was playing games. Trapped in his familiar comforts but places he now didn’t want to be. The hangover from last night had him spinning.

He promised himself he’d change. He’d made a commitment to others. He knew he was supposed to do something but the pieces didn’t fit. Things were never so clear last night but now it was all a mess. a new path had been shown but now the old one was easier.

That night he wanted things to change but in the morning he sobered up. A sudden push, he evaluated his life. In the morning it all went blank. Back to reality, back to normality was the way forward as his head stopped spinning and he forgot about the night of his conversion.

A Poem

A long time ago there was a man.

An ordinary man, but with one significant difference.

He was a non-conformist.

He didn’t do things how everyone else did things.

He imagined a new way and he lived that way.

A non-conformist began a revolution, a new way to conform.

Soon many people stopped conforming.

People knew his way was better.

However, soon the peoples imitation sunk back into conformity.

They just didn’t realise it.

I wear a poppy.

I hold the silence.

I remember those who died because of war.

I support non-violence and don’t condone conflict.

I am a pacifist.

The above statements are true for me. They are true for many, and I want to write a post about remembering the sacrifice of others whilst holding a stance that we should beat our swords into plowshares and our spears into pruning hooks like so many have said and done. However the above statements increasingly come with a ‘but’.

I am a supporter of non-violence and I look forward to the days when we no longer need violence to settle our scores. But I am beginning to think that currently, at the stage humanity is at, war might still be a necessity. Necessity might be a strong word and a necessity is only very extreme cases.

I think the Second World War is the greatest example of this. We remember the sacrifice because they fought, not just to win or against ‘the enemy’, but for democracy, freedom of speak, freedom of religion, culture, ethnicity. There may have been opportunities which if taken would have resulted in peaceful solutions to the political situation in Europe in the 30′s but given the situation in 1939 I think the Allies were right to declare war. Whether I myself would pick up a rifle is perhaps another matter but having read a little about the atrocities of the Holocaust I think I would be willing to fight to end that annihilation.

On a much more local level, a wise friend once said to me ‘I’m not a violent man, but if someone came into my home and was harming my family I don’t know what I would do’. Is there a non-violent response in this situation?

I think as humanity we are progressing towards a peaceful world. War has change dramatically over the centuries, each movement a helpful stepping stone. Just war theory, Political negotiations and sanctions, diplomatic collaboration, treaties, Geneva Convention and modern laws of war. These things are by no means perfect but they are a step forward from the days of the Persians and Romans. I think as a pacifist I should seek peaceful alternatives and always be questioning a decision to go to war. I think as a realist I should understand that sometimes engaging in violence might be a necessary solution to a much greater evil.

I am not saying that all wars can be justified. I would march against some from recent years and I am severely against the you-bomb-us-so-we’ll-kill-your-leader ‘justice’ but I feel some conflicts can be justified.

And even if we can’t justify some wars we must pay respect to those who gave everything so we could have our freedoms.

My previous post never tried to explain why or how I had come to my conclusions and there seems to be a call for explanation. A full explanation would require 24 years of history, thought, convocation and decision so this is always going to be inadequate. In fact it is often inadequate in my mind and I’m largely unconvinced of my own thoughts. Many things are a matter of opinion and mine isn‘t always made up. These are my works in progress. Nothing is comprehensive. Everything is up for debate.

.

My current thought – I’m not convinced that Jesus is the Son of God in the sense that we traditionally understand. To be more specific I’m not convinced that Jesus was actually God. God is God.

.

My current understanding is this – in some kind of (very big) nut shell

.

Our understanding of God affects whether we can talk about God as Jesus. If you see God chiefly under the metaphor of an interventionist Father figure who creates and chooses to engage here and there then Jesus as God may make perfect sense. Equally if your starting point for God is being bound by concern with a broken relationship with humanity then Jesus might need to be God to achieve a solution. I haven’t got a problem with these views of God but it is not where I am coming from when I use the word. I see God as an indescribable force/spirit (for lack of a better word) Within and beyond nature. Within and beyond ourselves. God is creation. God is love. God is.

.

The initial problem is the degrees – I think that Jesus was God-like. He embodied God. He was God incarnate. He was a revelation of God, he may even be the foremost revelation. In this sense he may the one who bridges the gap between humanity and God, he may be saviour and possibly even Lord. But I don’t think that Jesus was God. He wasn’t a part of God but God was a part of him. Thinking about it this way means I am beginning to understand the language and metaphors used in the bible in different ways. Doing this can add to our understanding of Jesus and not necessarily take it away.

.

It wasn’t until AD325 at the council of Nicea that the debate over Jesus’ divinity was settled and it seems to have been largely assumed ever since. Between Jesus’ death and the Council of Nicea many people thought differing things – some thought Jesus was God, or just a man, some thought they were 2 different Gods. Since then I believe we have read, understood and translated the Bible in light of Jesus’ assumed divinity – that is we have thought Jesus is God and that the authors of the Bible think he is God, we think that the metaphors they use must mean he is God. By doing this we read our own theology into a situation.

.

As an example lets quickly look at John 1: 1-18. We assume that the ‘word’ is Jesus, but the ‘word’ is ‘logos’ similar to wisdom. ‘logos’ is a masculine word so the section reads ‘he’. Here it is the ‘logos’ and not Jesus who is with God and was God. As we read on the ‘word’ becomes flesh in Jesus, Jesus is the incarnation of the word, the divine wisdom. Jesus embodies the word and gives it flesh. I don’t think this means that Jesus was God but is showing a ‘fleshy’ side to God, in this section especially the wisdom of God.

.

It can also be argued that as the bible was translated it was altered to imply a certain theology, especially after people had fought so hard to come to the conclusions. I think we have to take the claim very seriously that the Bible is the product of human authors and translators, with their own history, theology, agenda and occasional mistake. Again using John 1 as an example. In the NIV verse 18 reads ‘but the one and only Son, who is God himself…’ whilst other translations omit ‘who is God himself…’

.

Jesus is described as many things, such as the Wisdom of God, Lamb of God, Son of God, Son of man, Prince of Peace, Light of the World, Living Water, Bread of life, etc Why do we seem to prescribe specific importance to some and not others, namely Jesus as the Son of God. Believing Jesus as the ‘Son of God’, or the second part of the trinity (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) is almost used as a test for Christian faith. The trinity should be about understanding the primary ways God is known or revealed, not about a definition of God – that is God is known as the God of Israel, as God seen in Jesus and as abiding Spirit.

.

Son of God, I believe, means embodiment of God. Jesus embodied God, was God-like, had attributes of God, just like we can. He was also the embodiment of man, he embodied how we are to be fully human, in union with God. He gave the Wisdom of God flesh. Jesus lived out God’s Wisdom. Jesus triumphed peace, the Prince of Peace fought the lord’s of violence. Jesus was the ultimate embodiment of God on Earth. He was God incarnate. He was God in human form.

.

Jesus is described as ‘Messiah’ and ‘Christ’, meaning ‘anointed one’. Jesus can still be the anointed one, the chosen one, without literally being God. He can still be the saviour that Israel was waiting for and that creation climaxed in.

Jesus doesn’t seem to have much to say about him being Messiah or being God but has lots to say about reconnecting people back to God. Jesus is very ambiguous when quizzed by Pilate, He warns people not to tell others when they claim he is the Messiah. But Jesus is keen for people to follow his way, live the life he lives and understand his truth.

.

The story of Jesus’ resurrection is often used to prove he was God. I believe there is a strong claim that these stories may be stories used by 1st Century Jesus communities to explain what Jesus was like and his importance, they are not necessarily historical. It is important to remember that this is common throughout the bible, including the gospels. For example, most people would say Genesis 1 is a story told by a community to explain what God is like. Most scholars would say that Jesus’ ‘I am’ sayings in John’s gospel are a reflection of a community using metaphors to explain Jesus’ nature.

.

Some things to consider about the resurrection stories: The first gospel written, Mark, originally didn’t have any resurrection stories. All 4 gospels have differing resurrection stories, but similar death accounts. The author of Luke has Jesus ascend twice at different times, one at the end of Luke and once at the start of Acts.

.

My understanding of Jesus doesn’t nullify him, I believe it can leave a richer understanding of the person of Jesus and ultimately hopefully God. This understanding reveres Jesus and the stories about him become central. He is the stories central human character. We are to learn about and follow Jesus. He may be the gap between God and humanity. Becoming a Christian, that is a little Christ, might be really crucial to us tapping into God. Our example is in Jesus but our prayers and worship belong to God.

.

Christianity is usually defined as believing that Jesus is God’s son and therefore God. As far as I am aware this isn’t what Jesus said…I think we would be better off defining Christianity as, something like, following the way of Jesus into knowing the God Jesus knew.

.

Or, interesting, as Rowan Williams has it on the Church of England Website ‘Christian life is lived in relationship with God, through Jesus Christ’

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

(And here is a thought…if Jesus isn’t God, but God is and we are worshipping Jesus then haven’t we created ourselves an idol, a human idol…)

I am agnostic in the sense that I don’t think we can ever fully know/comprehend God . I also think that is a compliment to God.

Because we can never fully know, it leads me to think that knowing isn’t as important as we make out.

I was brought up with a Christian world view, it is my tradition, culture and context and I am grateful for it; but if I am to remain a Christian then I need to redefine the word. Christianity to many, most but not all, is about believing that Jesus is God. If this is Christianity then I am not a Christian.

I would like to redefine Christianity as exploring God through, although not exclusively, Jesus. Or, if you like, following the way of Jesus into exploring God as Jesus knew.

Many people will not be happy with this definition and that’s ok.

I believe in God as some ‘thing’ beyond visibility, beyond us. Divinity if you will. What is important is that by God I’m not talking about a guy resembling Father Christmas in the sky who is either withdrawn or exercising divine intervention. ‘God’ is the great, cross-cultural, asexual, indescribable, unknowable, ever-present, ‘I am that I am’, beyond, divine, spirit, force, mystic, truth, wisdom, love, justice, peace, thing – or whatever name you wish to prescribe…all we have is metaphor, right?…

I don’t think that Jesus was wholly divine. But he was in touch with the this divinity, as we can.

For me Jesus was the ‘Son of God’ only in a purely metaphorical sense. He was the ultimate, but not the only, human revelation and embodiment of God and therefore his character and the stories about him are central, not exclusive. Other people, traditions and cultures have something to say about God too, including me and you.

Exploring God is about becoming fully human, in touch with all aspects of humanity. It is about restoring what’s broken, resurrecting things that were dead and evolving together towards our collective potential. This I believe is the journey that Jesus is inviting us on…

How well can you know something from the outside?

To truly understand something do you need to get in knee deep, or out your depth?

Can I experience the Sistine Chapel just on google images or from architectural journals? Is standing outside good enough or do I have to go in?

Can I understand someone having not met them?

Can I understand a culture without having lived in it?

I think you can see what I’m getting at, but I have just had this thought about how much we can know something from the outside.

It is impossible for us to understand other peoples cultures and religions and perspectives without actually ever being on the inside, without experiencing them, without living them…and it will be impossible for us to ever look at something completely through someone else’s lens. The point is, if we were them, we would reach the same conclusions.

I can never fully appreciate what it is like to be a Muslim (or Hindu, or atheist, or whatever) I can take a course in Islamic Studies, I could dress like a Muslim and act like one. But unless my theology changed rapidly I would never know what it is like to be a Muslim, and I certainly could never comprehend growing up with a Muslim world-view and understanding this as truth. So how much can I know of Islam having only been on the outside?

Being on the outside can have it advantages and give a important perspective, but we must remember that being on the outside is never the definitive vantage point and often we will never understand people unless we venture inside.

Standing on the outside we are always going to have misconceptions and judgements…

So you may have seen the latest cycling adventure – attempting to cycle 250miles in 24 hours.

Now I’ve done some pretty hairy bike rides in my life, but nothing quite like this. Sometimes my mind says it will be ok and we should be able to cycle further, other times I think it is probably impossible. Its going to be interesting to find out.

Chances are it will be as much a psychological test, as much as a physical one…yeah my bum is gunna hurt but as long as my mind is convinced I can do it I’ll be able to keep going.

The difference between this and my other ride is that the motivation for this is to raise money for charity – something we probably should have done before. I’m not going to deny that part of this is about the personal challenge and having fun, but we are getting sponsored and wanna raise some serious cash.

We are cycling for 2 charities and I have a third up my sleeve.

Our global charity is WaterAid – Water is really important and there should be no reason why people don’t have access to it. This is the work of WaterAid

Our local charity is Gear-Up – This is a new Birmingham-based community initiative, encouraging people to get their bikes fixed and ride them. I personally am involved with this project and hope to see it grow over the next few years.

The third charity is not really a charity, but my sister. She is about to pack her bag and move to Ruwanda, where she will work as a youth worker and teacher. She is going it alone and needs some finance support to get started. If you want to sponsor her please get in touch.

We have gone a bit mental with the sponsorship so have a website and video and stuff…check it out…and please support us – you can come down and watch on the 8/9 of October or, perhaps more importantly, please sponsor us…
